please welcome designer Bumki Song’s creations to the shelves of & son. Song’s beautiful incense holders are less like holders and more like monuments. a glimpse of a zen garden, this is the kiwa incense tray.
searching for inspiration, song saw the kiwa (traditional korean roof tiles). over time, koreans have written wishes on the tile. the unfortunate truth is that over time, objects and artifacts get abandoned. the kiwa Song saw was no different, and this is what sparked the concept of the kiwa incense tray.
“through those objects, I hope that the things that we overlook would be recognized and realize that everything around us, even the little things that we tend to ignore are worthy of our attention.”
these trays are intended to explore the concept of residue. the main idea is that the first glance does not tell the entire story, and there is more to be seen when taking a closer look.

here’s a description straight from Bumki Song:
“this incense tray focuses on how the ashes of incense stick is collected on the tray rather than how the sticks are held from incense tray like most other designs. Using image of Kiwa stacked, I made a pattern of the tray surface in order to collect ash of incense abstractly every different time. It can show that the ashes we tend to throw away can become the art on this tray.
using sand aluminum cast, created a rough surface to mimic the Kiwa texture. Sand aluminum casting does not require a mold to make the product. By using sand as a poultry mold, the surface of the product cast from aluminum is expressed as rough as the surface of sand. And using Shot blast as the surface treatment, the surface was made similar to that of Kiwa.”
